In Ancient Greek mythology, it was believed that Amethyst was dyed purple by the tears of Dionysus. There are 2 notable tales that are told as to why this happened. One tells of an angry Dionysus, ready to take revenge on the next mortal to cross his path for the insults he received from a human. He unleashes his duo of tigers to trap the next passerby. This passerby is Amethystos, a beautiful young maiden who was on her way to pay tribute to Artemis. With only seconds to intervene, Artemis turned the maiden into pure quartz to protect her. Dionysus, overcome with sorrow and remorse, weeps tears of wine onto the statue, staining it purple. Another story tells of his unrelenting advances on a young maiden who prays for divine intervention. Amethystos prays to the Gods to remain chaste and Artemis responds by turning her into Quartz. Humbled by her choice, Dionysus pours his wine over her Quartz Statue dying it purple. This story is why Amethyst is a good stone for recovery.
